Re-redefining the Republican Party

Republican Elephant The Republican Party is being presented a unique opportunity, the question is – of course – will they seize it?  The message sent by the American public to the radicals running our country in this past election was clear… woe, slow down.  We don’t want government to keep spending like there is no tomorrow, running up huge deficits and and debt, increasing our taxes or telling us what medical procedures we can get.
So, what is the opportunity?  Well, it appears that the elitist in Congress just didn’t get it.  They continue to move forward with the same manufactured urgency they displayed before the election and ultimately it will be their undoing.  The opportunity is for the Republican Party to define themselves as the champions of the character that made America the greatest society in history.  The country is longing for this display of fortitude in our political leaders.  I know I am.
For America to maintain the liberty, freedom and prosperity it has enjoyed for the past 233 years  it is essential that our leaders are of sound character.
The United States was formed by a people of remarkable morality, education, and character.  This character was demonstrated clearly during America's formative years as the founders managed to create a constitution of unmatched excellence despite the chaos of revolution.  The first century of our country saw numerous struggles, the Constitution withstood those struggles served its purpose well as the absolute foundation of  our government.
Since that time, America has fallen away from that foundation.  The government has repeatedly stepped outside the boundaries established by the constitution.  All three branches have failed to abide by their moral and legal obligation to uphold the Constitution.  They have fallen down in maintaining the balance of power and have systematically increased their spheres of control by gradually encroaching on the individual liberties of the citizens they serve.
The Republican can, and should, personify the character of our founders.  America believes that solid character is essential to maintain our republic.  Thomas Jefferson once said:
“Yes, we did produce a near perfect Republic.  But will they keep it, or will they, in the enjoyment of plenty, lose the memory of freedom?  Material abundance without character is the surest way to destruction.”
Leaders of sound moral character are essential for preserving liberty.  Some would say that the leaders are a reflection of the character of the people they represent,  I disagree.  I believe that the nature of politics has changed such that politicians believe that once they are elected they must compromise some of their beliefs to accomplish greater things.  But those greater things seldom come and they are left with only their egos.  Once their beliefs are compromised, their decisions regress to decisions based on self-preservation, not what is best for their constituents.  Not holding these officials accountable is the reflection of the character of our nation.
America's unbelievable prosperity and greatness is a result of the form of government we have established and is unquestionably dependent on the great moral character of our people. This prosperity and greatness will not continue forever without national character.
It is encouraging to see the uprising of America’s citizens in opposition to the recent acceleration to serfdom and is a hopeful indication that America’s moral character largely remains relatively strong.  The Republican Party can either be a representation of the strong moral character of the majority in this great nation or they can continue to play politics and continue to be the minority.

Paul, neither the RNC or DNC can be trusted. These institutions are equally corrupt and co-opted. The elitist run the show. A small handful serving in today's Congress buck the system (Ron Paul - Marci Kaptur - Bernie Sanders). Everyone else plays ball with those who fund their existence.

Change We Can Believe In and the Contract For America were election (propaganda) ploys to win the Independent vote.

Those who register or consider themselves as Independent need a home. An institution that is citizen managed with a populist agenda. I believe this sector of the voting public are the majority and further believe they're tired of being mislead into believing whatever the latest ploy from the RNC or DNC happens to be.

The Republican Party is dead. As long as they continue to put up RINO's and toe the party line - they will never be a strong party again. Now is the time for a real conservative third party - and we saw that with the NY-23 election. Right now, they're only posturing. Half of those GOPers in D.C. really want to vote for this disastrous health care bill - we know that from watching the house cap and trade debates. We know there are waay too many RINO's up there that don't care any more about our founding fathers and the U.S. Constitution than do the Dhimitards there. When the Repubs decide they want to be conservative again - which I sincerely doubt - only then can they ever be a party of power for the people.

Good points throughout -- the Republicans, if they are to achieve anything, will have to get back to their conservative roots. I'm sick to death of my party being represented by the likes of the Bush family while spend-happy goons like Mike Huckabee (the former governor of my state) are viewed as the future of the Republicans.

We've not had an honest-to-goodness, big picture conservative in the White House since Reagan. That's just sad. The weak, pitiful Bush lads watered down the party's core values so much that they came out looking like untrustworthy rascals and paved the way for even more untrustworthy rascals like Clinton and Obama to slither into office.

It's a terrible state of affairs, to be sure. The Republicans should be out for small government, low taxes, maximum personal liberty and respect for the Constitution -- I see nothing from the party these days but defense of corporate interests, some very odd (in that it comes across as insincere) religious posturing and the tendency to spend like Democrats.
