Obama’s First Year Apology Tours Fail – America is not Safer

Following his immaculation,  President Obama proceeded to go on a worldwide tour apologizing to nation after nation for America's manifold sins of pride and exceptionalism, militarism and imperialism, greedism and excessism.

By confessing our national sins, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said that Mr. Obama has "changed the image of America around the world" and made the U.S. "safer and stronger."

In the aftermath of the attempted terror attack by the “Tighty-Whitey” bomber on Christmas Day, the United States demanded more careful screening for people who are citizens of, or are flying from, 14 nations deemed security risks.  It appears that the apology tours were ineffective at soliciting the support of these nations as the enforcement of the new U.S. rules appear to be spotty at best.

Obama's seemingly compulsive need to apologize to foreign audiences on behalf of the United States cannot be explained as a rational approach to diplomacy and has done little to make America safer.

We weren’t too surprised by the President’s America bashing because it's what Democrats do. Obama isn't the first Democratic president to "blame America first."  Rather, he is just following in the footsteps of Presidents Carter and Clinton.  Both obviously thought, as Obama professes to, that our friends and adversaries would react to our self-abasement by embracing policies more to our liking. Both found out that nations and factions act as they do out of self-interest, not in reaction to American words.  As we can see by the reaction to America’s request for tougher screening practices on flights bound for US airports, the idea that bashing our nation will result in getting what we want is seriously flawed.

This rash of new permanent procedures are more of a knee-jerk response than anything else.  Requiring one hundred percent inspections on travelers from 14 “terrorist” countries is a kind of feel good, but useless idea. Terrorists are not stupid, they route their attacks through the international air hubs that are not the most suspicious.  Remember 9/11 was launched from airports within the US.  The Christmas Day attack could have been launched from a domestic flight too.  Does it make any sense to attempt to thwart the last attack instead of the next one?  Real security will not come from throwing billions of more dollars at aviation security.  It will come from getting the terrorists. Shame on Obama and his administration for introducing a bunch of measures that will inconvenience all of us just so it can say it is doing something…rather than doing its job and going after the terrorists.

President Obama has said. "The United States is not at war with Islam. In fact, our partnership with the Muslim world is critical in rolling back a fringe ideology that people of all faiths reject."  I have no issue with this statement, in fact, President Bush made similar statements the difference is that he followed this statement by strongly stating that we are at war with radical jihadists.

Mr. Obama’s reactions indicates that he believes that there is moral equivalence between America and its adversaries.  Hell… Obama can’t even bring himself to admit that an Islamic Jihad Holy War even exists… he can’t admit that Major Nidal Hasen is a Jihadist War Fighter and his shooting at Fort Hood was an Act of War and most disturbingly he can’t admit that the Crotch Bomber was part of a well-funded and Al Qaeda engineered Islamic Jihadist Attack on Americans.  They are merely criminals, not Islamic Jihad War Fighting Soldiers.  Obama referred to Abdulmutallab as the “suspect” five times and promised he would “not rest until we find all who were involved and hold them accountable treating the attack as if it were a common law-enforcement problem

As the facts unfolded surrounding the attempted terrorist attack, the American public learned that not only was the Obama administration briefed about the bombing technique attempted on Flight 253, not only did the US have information that a Nigerian was being prepared for a terrorist attack by al Qaeda in Yemen, but our government also knew that an “Umar Farouk” was involved.

Following these revelations, the Obama administration took to the Sunday talk shows to defend their national security record.  Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano even tried to convince Americans that “the system worked”. As we now know, She failed.

Since 9/11, there have been 28 failed terrorist attacks perpetrated against the United States. Doing some simple math, that averages about three foiled attempts per year.  In 2009, there were six failed attempts — the most in one year since 2001.  As troubling as these incidents are by themselves, Americans should be concerned about a White House that looks at this body of evidence and then declares “the system is working.”  No, it is not.

There is no explanation but this is obviously a failure of leadership. A failure by the occupant of the White House to admit we are at war and utilize the tools at his disposal to protect the people that placed him in power.  Instead of instilling stability and confidence in the intelligence community by renewing key investigatory authorities authorized under the USA Patriot Act, this administration is burying its head in the sand.  The consequences of emboldening these extremists through a weak posture can and will be catastrophic if strong action is not taken.

My faulting the Obama’s administration for a lack of leadership is by no means meant to be a partisan criticism.  Political points will not make us safe.  These terrorists don’t give a rip if they kill Republicans or Democrats.  Nobody, even Rush, wants the White House to fail in this mission.  The President needs to stop blaming Bush and look forward. He needs to start over.  Winning the war against these Jihadist warriors needs to be  the top priority and he needs to act like a war president day in and day out.

The Obama administration must stop thinking of al Qaeda and Abdulmutallab as mere criminals.  This blindness to the fact that we are at war is the same mindset influencing Obama’s decision to send Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four other terrorists to New York for a civilian trial in federal court. I seriously hope and pray that this incident will prod Obama into revisiting that historically bad decision.
